Kerala Water Authority

 Calicut

Kerala Water Authority, established in 1984, manages water supply and wastewater systems in Kerala. Formed from the Public Health Engineering Department, it ensures sustainable water resources, enhancing public health and environmental quality in the state.

Project Overview

The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) was established on 1st April 1984 under the Kerala Water and Waste Water Ordinance, 1984. It was formed by converting the erstwhile Public Health Engineering Department to manage the development and regulation of water supply and wastewater collection and disposal in Kerala. This transformation aimed to address the growing need for efficient water management systems in the state.

In 1986, the ordinance was replaced by the Kerala Water Supply and Sewerage Act (Act 14 of 1986), further solidifying KWA’s responsibilities. The Act vested the properties and assets of the Public Health Engineering Department, along with the assets, rights, and liabilities of local bodies and the Kerala State Rural Development Board, with the Authority.

KWA's mandate includes ensuring sustainable water resources and sewerage systems to enhance public health and environmental quality in Kerala. It has since been at the forefront of implementing innovative water management solutions, contributing significantly to the state’s development and the well-being of its citizens.
