Project Overview
The Government of West Bengal restructured the former WBSEB into two successor entities: West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) and West Bengal State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (WBSETCL). These companies have been operational since April 1, 2007, under state ownership.
WBSEDCL provides power to 96% of West Bengal, serving over 84 lakh customers from villages to industrial units. Its extensive network includes 5 Zones, 17 Regional Offices, 53 Distribution Divisions, and 459 Customer Care Centers. The company meets 80% of the state’s peak power demand and reported a profit of Rs 71.05 crore in 2009-10.
To address power shortages and environmental concerns, WBSEDCL established the Purulia Pumped Storage Project with 900 MW hydel power capacity. Enhanced Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and improved work culture have led to better customer care and increased distribution efficiency. WBSEDCL is now a techno-commercially viable organization with 100% feeder and DTR metering.
